Wife of Holy Prophet Muhamamd Hazrat Zainab Bint Jahsh

Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Zainab bint-e-Jahash رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا

Her Lineage:

The kunyat of Ummul Momineen Hazrat Zainab daughter of Jahash رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہاwas Umm-ul-Hikam and first name was ‘Barah’. The Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  named her Zainab by changing it. Her genealogy is as the following.

“Zainab daughter of Jahash son of Rabab son of Ya‘mar son of Subayrah son of Murrah son of Kaseer son of Ghanam son of Daudaan son of Asad son of Khuzaymah son of Mudrikah.” Her mother name was Umaimah daughter of Abdul Muttalib. This was paternal aunty of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . Likewise, she (Hazrat Zainab) was the paternal cousin of Rasoolullahصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم .

Early Life:

Her first Nikah (marriage) was performed with Hazrat Zaid son of Harithahرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ  and he was the adopted son and freed slave of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . Both relations could not be pleasant. Hazrat Zaid رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ asked for the permission to divorce her. He صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم suggested him to be constant in relation with her. When their relations became more unpleasant, then Hazrat Zaid son of Harithaرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ divorced her.

The Honor of Ummul Momineen:

When Hazrat Zaid son of Harithah divorced her, because adopted son was considered the real child in Arab at that time, therefore the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  kept on delaying but, since it was the ritual of ignorance and it was the purpose of eliminating it. That is why, Almighty Allah ordered him to marry with her by revealing following verses of the Holy Quran.

Almighty Allah says:

(Surah. Al-Ahzab, V. 37)

Translation from English Version of Kanzul Iman:

“And (O beloved) remember when you said to him whom Allah had favored and you have favored, “keep your wife to yourself and fear Allah.” And you had hidden in your heart which Allah was to bring to light and you feared mankind and Allah has a better right that you fear Him. So when Zaid completed the formality with her (of divorce) then we gave her to you in marriage that the believers should not be forbidden to take the wives of the adopted son in marriage after they have completed the formality (of release). And Allah’s command must be fulfilled.”

After revealing this verse, the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  got marriage to her in Dhul Qadah, 5 Hijri. The verses of veil were revealed in his Walimah ceremony.

Virtues and Peculiarities:

It is narrated by Hazrat Anas رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ: “After marriage, Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Zainab daughter of Jahash رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا used to feel proud upon the wives of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم ورضوان اللہ تعالٰی عنہن and would say that your nikah (marriage) were performed by your guardians whereas Almighty Allah performed my nikah Himself on the Holy throne (Arsh-e-Majeed). Rasoolullah جل جلالہ وصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم served the beef and bread on my Walimah ceremony. She was a great worshiper and bountiful, a skilled woman. She would spend in the way of Almighty Allah whatever she used to earn. Similarly, she would receive whatever thing from ‘Bait-ul-Mal’ (house of wealth), she would also distribute them among the needy people. Disbelievers of Makkah overstated and made a noise on that marriage that Muhammad صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلمmade the ‘halal’ (lawful things) of a forbidden things (haram) by getting married with the wife of his adopted son but the Holy Quran gave a slap on the face of enemies by saying this,

"مَاکَانَ مُحَمَّدٌاَبَااَحَدٌ مِّنْ رِّجَالِکُمْ"and clearly said,"اُدْعُوْھُمْ لِاٰبَآءِھِمْ ھُوَاَقسَطُ عِنْدَ اللہِ". After that, Hazrat Zaidرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ  was called Zaid bin Harithah instead of Zaid bin Muhammad صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم.

It is narrated by Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Ayeshah رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا that Rasoolullah صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم said, “After my demise, a woman of you will meet me first, who has long hands. Therefore, we used to measure the height of our hands together. (that who will meet first with the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم). When Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Zainab daughter of Jahash رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا passed away, so then we came to know the meaning of the word ‘long hands’ which was said by Rasoolullah صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم, was the generosity and bounty. Because Hazrat Zainab رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا used to give the Sadaqah (charity) in the way of Almighty Allah abundantly. Therefore, she had the long hands. Further said, that I never saw such a bountiful, ascetic and truthful woman in my whole life. The Holy Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  said to Hazrat Umarرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ : “I had never seen like Hazrat Zainab رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا, she had the greatest fear of Almighty Allah and humility in all women.” Her two widow sisters-in-law were the ones of the wives of the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم :

  • Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Umm-e-Habibah رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا, who was the widow of Ubaidullah son of Jahash.
  • Umm-ul-Momineen Hazrat Zainabرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا daughter of Khuzaimah, who was the widow of Abdullah son of Jahash.

Demise:

She passed away in 20 Hijri, in the time of the caliphate (Khilafat) of Hazrat Umar Farooqرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ . She was fifty three years old at that time. Hazrat Umar Farooq رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ performed the imaamat of her funeral prayer. Usamah son of Zaid, Muhammad son Abdullah son of Jahash and Abdullah son of Abu Ahmed son of Jahashعلیھم الرّضوان  placed her into the grave. She was the first woman for whom the coffin was prepared. Her Shrine is in Jannat-ul-Baqi.
