Hazrat Ummul Momineen Sayyidah Maimoona

Hazrat Ummul Momineen Sayyidah Maimoona رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا

Name and Lineage:

Her name was ‘Barrah’ but the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  changed it to ‘MAIMOONA’رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا and her genealogy is as follows:

“Maimoona daughter of Harith son of Huzn son of Bujair son of Hazam son of Rubiya son of Abdullah son of Hilal son of Amir son of Sa’sa’a son of Muawiya son of Bakr son of Hawazen son of Mansoor son of Ikrimah son of Khasfa son of Qais son of Aylan son of Mudar son of Nizar”

Her mother’s name was Hind daughter of Awf. It was generally said about her, that she was the luckiest old woman in the world in terms of the sons in law, because following sacred personalities are included in the list of her sons in law:

They all were her blessed sons in law and her second good fortune was that her two blessed daughters were in the nikah of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . (Zarqani V. 3, P. 251 and Madarij, V. 2, P. 484)

Marriage with the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم:

When the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  went to Makka-tul-Mukarramah to perform Umratul Qadah  in 7 Hijri, she had been a widowed. Hazrat Abbas رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ talked to the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  about her and Rasool Allahجل جلالہ و صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  got married to her. On returning from Umratul Qadah, the ritual consummation was performed at ‘Sarif’. When the Nikah message reached her, she رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا was on a camel. She said, “The camel and whatever is on it is for the Messenger of Allahجل جلالہ و صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم .” (Al-Tafseer Al-Qurtubi, fourteenth part, Al-Ahzab: 50, V. 7, P. 154)
Total seventy-six Hadiths were narrated by Hazrat Bibi Maimoonaرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا . Seven of them has been mentioned in both Bukhari and Muslim. One Hadith was mentioned just in Bukhari and one Hadith is such that was mentioned in only Muslim Sharif. The rest of the Hadiths stated in other books of Hadiths. She was the last wife of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . After her, Rasool Allah جل جلالہ و صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم did not marry to any woman. Difference of opinion is found among historians in the year of her demise but the famous view is, that she passed away at ‘Sarif’ in 51 AH. Ibn-e-Saadرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ  narrated from Waqidi that she passed away in 61 AH and Ibn-e-Ishaqرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ  said that 63 Hijri is her demise year. (Almighty Allah knows better.)

At the time of her demise, her nephew Hazrat Abdullah son of Abbasرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہما  was present and he led her funeral prayer, then he placed her into the grave. Muhaddith Ata رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ stated that we were participated in the funeral rites of Hazrat Bibi Maimoonaرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ  along with Hazrat Abbas رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ. When her sacred funeral was lifted, Hazrat Abdullah son Abbasرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنھما  said aloud, “O people! She is the wife of the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم , carry her funeral very slowly and do not shake her sacred dead body.

Strange coincidence: This is a strange coincident that her nikah, consummation and demise took place at the same place, which is called ‘Sarif’ and it is located on the distance of ten miles from Makka-tul-Mukarramah. It is very close to the Masjid-e-Taneem.
