Sultan-ul-Arifeen Hazrat Bayazid Bastami رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ
Name and Lineage:
His name is ‘Taifoor’ and kunyat is ‘Bayazid’. His title is ‘Sultan-ul-Arifeen’ and he is called Bastami due to the connection of Bastam area. ‘Taifoor son of Isa son of Sharosaan Bastami’, is his genealogy.
Date of Birth:
He was born, in 188 AH/ 804 AD, in Bastam city of Khurasan, which is the area of Iran.
Acquisition of Knowledge:
He received early education from a Madrasa nearby his home. He was inclined to the Sufism since childhood. The intellectual gatherings of all Islamic sciences and arts used to hold in Masajid at that time. He acquired the scholarly benefits from many Mashaikh in different cities and got the expertise in all kinds of knowledge.
Allegiance and Caliphate (Khilafat):
He esoterically got the spiritual training by Hazrat Imam Jafar-e-Sadiqرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ .
Character and Peculiarities:
He was a congenital Wali because his respected mother said, “When he was in my belly, I felt something that was quite strange. Whenever I had a suspected morsel, he would be uneasy because of that and he would not get relaxed unless I vomit. ”Hazrat Junaid Baghdadiرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ said, “Bayazid had such a great personality among our mystical group, as Hazrat Jibraeelعلیہ السّلام had the great status among all the angels علیہم السّلام and where the status of Sufis ends, Bayazid status starts علیھم الرّحمۃ from there. Once upon, he went to perform Haj and he got to Makka-tul-Mukarramah within 12 years. After walking few steps, he would lay the prayer mat on the way and start offering two rakaats prayers. He used to say, “ this is not a court of the worldly king that we could immediately reach there.” This time, he returned back without visiting to Madinah and he said about it “making the subordinate of Hajj to Madina visit, is against the respect.” Therefore, he wore the Pilgrim robe to visit for Madina separately. When Sheikh Abu Saeed Abul Khairرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ came to meet him, he said, “This is the place where people can find their lost things, which they have been lost anywhere around the world.”
Riyazat-o-Mujahidah (Mystic Exercise)
He went from Bastam and he kept on performing the mystic exercise in the forests of Syria. Someone asked for him, which is the hardest Mujahidah? Which you performed in the way of Almighty Allah so he replied, it is not possible to explain. He requested for telling the easier trouble which you (Bayazidرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ) suffered. He said ok, listen; once I called my psyche towards an obedient so it denied to obey me. Therefore, I consequently kept it thirsty for a year.
Similarly, Hazrat Ghaus-e-Azam, Khawaja Gharib Nawaz and other Mashaikhعلیھم الرّحمہ used to perform such long-infirmities and Mujahidahs etc. In spite of this, they would not claim of the sainthood. By the grace of Almighty Allah, their sainthood are popular around the world but it is the contrary to the present situation. Mystic exercise is the far-off matter, the compliance on the Shariah is not found here nowadays. If we take a look at the titles that are given to the people, people of today are not willing to take any title or position that is lower than a position of Qutub and Ghaus.
Translation: “If you find someone flying in the air, you should not believe on it unless you check out his character. How is he? in the commands and prohibitions, memorize limits, and in following the Shariah.”
Allama Iqbal said:

He passed away in 15 Shaban-ul-Muazzam, 261 AH/ 874 AD.مزید
