Hazrat Sheikh-ul-Islam Allama Makhdoom Hashim Thathwi

Sheikh-ul-Islam Makhdoom Muhammad Hashim Thatviرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ 

Name and Lineage:

His name is MUHAMMAD HASHIM and kunyat is Abu Abdur Rahmaan. He had the titles of Sheikh-ul-Islam, Shams-ul-Millat-i-Waddeen and Makhdoom-ul-Makhaadeem. His genealogy is following:

“Muhammad Hashim son of Abdul Ghafoor son of Abdur Rahmaan son of Abdul Latif son of Abdur Rahmaan son of Khairuddin Harsiرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہم .” 

Date of Birth:

­He was born in Bhatura city (Thatta district, Sindh) on Thursday, 10 Rabi-ul-Awwal, 1104 AH/ 1692 AD. 

Acquisition of Knowledge:

He received early education from his father. He completed the Holy Quran in just six months. He completed other Islamic sciences from Hazrat Makhdoom Muhammad Saeed and Maulana Muhammad Ziauddinرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیھما  and science of Hadith got from Makhdoom Muhammad Moin Thatviرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ. 

Allegiance and Caliphate (Khilafat):

He became Mureed on the blessed hand of Qutb-e-Rabbani Syed Sadullah Qadri Saloni son of Syed Ghulam Muhammad Saloni Qadriرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہما , who granted him a ‘Khirqah-e-Khilafat’ (saintly dress) also. 

Character and Peculiarities:

Sheikh-ul-Islam Makhdoom Muhammad Hashim Thatviرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ was Makhdoom-ul-Makhaadeem, Sanad-ul-Aqaaleem and Malja-ul-Fuqahaa’i-wal-Muhaddiseen. He was Haarisi as per his family. According to Maslak (sect), he was Hanafi; in accordance with Mashrab, he was Qadri; and He was a Sindhi in terms of birth place. He was a king of knowledge, grace, mystical knowledge, Sufism. He had a great status in the intellectual world and religious history as well. He was a sun of blessing, which illuminated the hearts of people from the light of Islam. He was a cloud of mercy, by which lots of people used to get the benefits from his bounties. His Khanqah was a centre of knowledge, grace and guidance until half century. Thousands of thirsty of knowledge quenched their thirsty by going there and hundreds of people got light of knowledge found there. On Thursday, 9 Rajab-ul-Murajjab 1136 AH, in Madina-tul-Munawwarah, he got the privilege to see the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ علیہ تعالٰی وسلم. He mentioned it in the explanatory note of a book as remembrance:

“I visited the mausoleum of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم ,  and presented the salaat-o-salam upon him, then Rasool-e-Akramصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم  replied and said,

وعلیکم السلام یا محمد ھاشم التتوی!‘‘

It can be easily figured that how status he had in the auspicious court of Rasoolullahجل جلا لہ و صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . The peculiarity of his life was the love of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم , which he got it from the heritage and its effect would have appeared clearly on his life. All his work would have been performed according to the holy Sunnah of Rasoolullahجل جلالہ و صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم. He was an excellent example of the holy Sunnah. A large number of non-Muslims embraced Islam through his teachings. Similarly, he secured the beliefs of Ahl-e-Sunnat of Sindh through his constant struggle. He left the useful memorable storage of books for the Muslim Ummah. 


He passed away on Thursday, 6 Rajab-ul-Murajjab, 1174 AH/ 1761 AD and his shrine is a resort of all in Makli city (District Thatta).
