Sheikh-ul-Islam Hazrat Sheikh Shahabuddin Umar Soharwardi
Name and Lineage:
His name is ‘SHAHABUDDIN UMAR’. Kunyat is ‘Abul Hafs’ and his titles are ‘Sheikh-ul-Islam and Sheikh-al-Shuyukh” who was the founder of Soharwardia order. His genealogy is as follows:
“Abu Hafs Shahabuddin son of Umar son Ahmed son of Abdullah son of Muhammad son of Abdullah Al-Bakri known as Sheikh Umwiah, son of Saad son of Husain son of Qasim son of Saad son of Nasr son of Abdur Rahmaan son of Qasim son of Muhammad son of Ameer-ul-Momineen Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiqرضوان اللہ تعالٰی عنہم اجمعین ”
Date of Birth:
He was born in ‘Suhraward’ a surrounding town of Zanjan (the capital of Azerbaijan) in Rajab-ul-Murajjab, 539 AH/ 1145 AD.
Acquisition of Knowledge:
He received Islamic sciences from the renowned Scholars of that time. Muhaddith son of Najjar, Muhaddith Sheikh Abul Ghanaaim and Sheikh Abul Abbas علیھم الرّحمہ etc. are included in them and he was also counted in the renowned Scholars of that time. That is why, the prominent Scholars and Mashaikh of that time would come to him to solve the their issues.
Allegiance and Caliphate (Khilafat):
He was a Mureed and Khalifa of his respected uncle Sheikh Ziauddin Soharwardiرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ and he also got the beneficence and blessings from Qutb-e-Rabbani Mahboob-e-Subhani Ghaus-ul-Azam Hazrat Syed Abdul Qadir Jilaniرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ .
Character and Peculiarities:
He belonged to the Shafi’ee Maslak (sect). He was a great Jurist and Muhaddith of his time. Syed Abdul Qadir Jilani رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ said about him that “یا عمر انت آخر انت آخر المشہورین بالعراق” i.e. “O Umar! You are the last famous person of the Iraq’s land.” After the demise of Hazrat Mahboob-e-Subhaniرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ , there was no saint like him on the land of Iraq. He was not only limited to his Khanqah but also he kept a closer look on the national situation as well as on the matters of Islamic world. Whenever he would find a matter against the Shariah somewhere, he would resist it. That is why, his Kulafa competed against the opponents of Islam everywhere. People of the entire world usually and people of the subcontinent (Indo-Pak) especially, got the much beneficence from him. Once, he said that “خلفائی فی الہند کثیرۃ” i.e. “a large number of mine Khulafa are in Hind.” His renowned Khulafa are as follows:
“Sheikh-ul-Islam Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Multani, Muslihuddin Sheikh Saadi Shirazi, Sheikh Najmuddin Kubra, Sheikh Fariduddin Attar and Sultan Sakhi Sarwar علیھم الرّحمہ etc.”
He passed away on the month of 1st Muharram-ul-Haram, 632 AH/ September, 1234 AD and his blessed Shrine is the resort of all in Baghdad.
