Hazrat Salman Farsi رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ was the one of renowned companions of the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم. Initially, he was belonged to the Zoroastrian but the search of ‘Haq’ (righteousness) brought him under the shadow of Islam. He had the command over many languages and had the knowledge of different religions. Because of the predictions of different religions about the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم, he was waiting for the appearance of Hazrat Muhammad Mustafaصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم so that he could choose the righteousness.
His genealogical relation belonged to the Abul Mulk’s family of Isfahan. His Zoroastrian’s name was ‘Maba’. After embracing Islam, he was named Salman and he got the title of ‘Salman-ul-Khair’ by the auspicious court of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . His kunyat was ‘Abu Abdullah’. His genealogy is as following:
“Maba son of Bu-Dhakhshaan son of Mor-Salaan son of Yahodhaan son of Feroz son of Sehrak.”
He was born in a Rouzbeh village of Isfahan city of Iran. His father belonged to the religion of Zoroastrians but his (Hazrat Salman’s) heart was in searching the righteousness. At first, he chose the Christianity and kept on searching Haq. A Christian monk told him about the arrival of the true Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم that is coming close. The prediction of that is existing in old religious books. That expert monk also told the blessed contour of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم and a possible place of his appearance, namely about Madina-tul-Munawwarah. It was called ‘Yathrib’ (یثرب) at that time. After knowing that he started trying for going to Madina. In the way of Madina, a Bedouin group sold him as a slave to a Jewish by deceit. That Jewish used to live in Madina, therefore Hazrat Salman Farsi رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ got to Madina and he was forced to work hard in Jewish’s garden. After some time, he listened the news that a claimant of the Prophethood came to Madina by migrating from Makkah. Salman Farsi رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ immediately recognized from the characteristics of that Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم that he is the true Prophet صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم of Almighty Allah. He also saw ‘Mohr-e-Nubuwwat’(seal of the Prophet). He embraced Islam at that time. To liberate him from the slavery, Rasoolullah صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم himself planted palm trees with his blessed hands, that was a purpose of the fulfillment of Jewish condition.
Virtues and Merits:
The Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم said about him that if the ‘Emaan’ (belief) had with Surayyah (the Pleiades), then people of their nation would surely find it. On the occasion of digging the trench, Salman Farsi رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ was the most active in all. Then Muhajir (immigrants) said, “Salman is ours.” When Ansaris listened that, they said, “Salman is ours”. When it reached to the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم , thus he صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم said, “Salman is one of my Ahl-e-Bait علیھم الرّضوان.” Therefore, he was counted in Ahl-e-Bait علیھم الرّضوان .
Asceticism and Piety:
His asceticism and piety reached such a higher position that the boundary of Monasticism started after it. A lower example of it is that he never built a house during his lifetime. Wherever he found the shadow of a tree, he would stay there. A man asked for the permission to build a home for him. He replied, no. I do not need it. He kept on insisting repeatedly but he constantly denied. He said in the last, I will build it as per your wish. He said, “What will be it like?” He said, so short that if a man stands up, then his head would touch the roof. Likewise, When he lies down, his feet will reach the wall. He said right, there is no harm in it. Therefore, he built a hut.
He was linked with Hazrat Abu Darda رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ in the connection of brotherhood.
Hazrat Ali رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ appointed him as the governor of Madain in 656 AD. After some weeks there, he passed away in 10 Rajab-ul-Murajjab 33 Hijri and his Shrine is in Madain.
