Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar

Hafiz Syed Muhammad Usman Marvandi Al-Maroof (known as)Lal Shahbaz Qalandar  علیہ الرّحمۃ

Name and Lineage:

His name is HAFIZ SYED MUHAMMAD USMAN MARVANDI and title is ‘LAL SHAHBAZ QALANDAR’. His genealogy is as follows:

“Hafiz Syed Muhammad Usman son of Syed Kabeer-ud-Deen son of Syed Shamsuddin علیھم الرّحمۃ.” His lineage goes to Hazrat Sayyiduna Imam Jafar-e-Sadiq رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ.

Date of Birth:

As per a famous saying, he was born in Marvand that is a town of Azerbaijan in 538 AH/ 1143 AD. He is called Marvandi by the relation of that area.

Acquisition of Knowledge:

He received early education and training under the shadow of his respected father. He completed Hifz-e-Quran at the age of seven years at a nearby Masjid close to the home. Then he got busy in other Islamic sciences and arts. He got the consummate skill in the traditional, intellectual, Arabic knowledge and Persian literature in a short time. He was one of the eminent scholars of his time.

Allegiance and Caliphate (Khilafat):

According to a right saying, he became Mureed of Hazrat Abu Ishaq Muhammad Ibrahim Qadriرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ and as per some writers, he was a Mureed of Sheikh-ul-Islam Ghaus Bahauddin Zakariyaرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ. It may be possible that Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ might grant him the caliphate that is the manner of Mashaikh.

Character and Peculiarities:

Lal Shahbaz Qalandar رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ was Imam-ul-Arifeen, Raees-ul-Mudarriseen, Qudwat-us-Saalikeen, Burhan-ul-Waasileen, Arif Billah, Fana fillah and Baqa Billah Hazrat Ali-e-Murtazaرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ  gave the good news of his birth in following words:

“O Ahmed Kabeer, Almighty Allah will grant you a son so remember it; when this child is born, name him Muhammad Usman and when he reaches the age of three hundred and eighty four days so carry him to Madina-tul-Munawwarah and present salaam (salutation) to the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . Then, go to the shrine of Hazrat Usman Ghani رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ and also present him the salaam.”

Therefore, respected father did the same as per advice of Hazrat Aliرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ . (Shahbaz-e-Wilayat, p. 8)

He was so beautiful and had a shining face like ‘la’l’ (ruby stone); that’s why people call him ‘Lal Shahbaz’.

On the one hand he was a great Scholar and Sufi, and the other hand he was the renowned Mudarris, orator, writer and poet. He had the consummate skills in Arabic and Persian knowledge and literature as well. He had huge study of Quran, Hadith and Fiqh and was the expert in linguistic knowledge and its grammar too. He also wrote some books. The desirous of Arabic grammar and literature used to come beside him for learning relevant knowledge from remote areas. He held the post of Sadr-ul-Mudarriseen (principal) in the Madrasah of Sheikh-ul-Islam Hazrat Ghaus Bahauddin Zakariyaرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ  that was a really great university of Asia at that time. Some authors wrote about his saintly order that was the Qalandari Tareeqat (order). Malangs have the misconceived thoughts about Qalandaries and they introduce Qalandari order in a wrong manner, such as Qalandaries leave Namaz and commit un-Islamic actions etc. Therefore, it will be better that should be presented the explanation of Qalandari order:

A person who is Hermit, Tahjjud prayer’s performer and cautious from psychological pleasures is called ‘Qalandar’.

Both the names Sufi and Qalandar are the same. Hazrat Khawaja Ubaidullah Ahraar, who died in 895 AH, said,

“Avoiding from worldly desires and making the psyche submissive to Almighty Allah is called ‘Qalandari order’.

In the eyes of Allama Iqbal, Qalandar is he who does not have any fear of difficulties of the world in his heart.

ہزار خوف ہوں لیکن زباں ہو دل کی رفیق
یہی رہا ہے ازل سے قلندروں کا طریق

Promotion of Innovations in the Pretext of Urs:

The annual Urs ceremony of Lal Shahbaz Qalandarرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ was swapped into the following shameful practices and rituals that usually happen on the occasion of Urs.

“A big crowd of illiterate people, singing and dancing, sport and spectacle, uncovered women’s throng, musical gathering, mendicants’ group dance as well as women’ dance on that occasion, pageant of whores and prostitutes, turbulent noise, business of hemps and marijuana, carrying henna into the Shrine to get married of Qalandar (نعوذ باللہ من ذٰلک), strange activities of Malangs, venerating the flag of dissenter’s Shias and asking for beseeching for the sake of it, blaspheming in the honor of Sahaba علیھم الرّضوان and swearing at three caliphsعلیھم الرّضوان  etc.”

Aforementioned things have no connection with the beliefs of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandarرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ. Sensual people, followers of Satan and disobedient people of Almighty Allah promoted these disgraceful practices and rites for the pleasure of their psyche. If Malangs are fond of following Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ, they should become a piety man and be punctual of five-time prayers. Similarly they should make a habit of performing supererogatory prayers constantly at whole night. Furthermore, they should abundantly recite Durood Shareef and make their child a Hafiz-e-Quran. They should avoid committing Haraam (strictly forbidden) actions and follow the Shariah. Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandarرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ said,

عثماں چو شد غلامِ نبی و چہار یار
امّیدش از مکارمِ عربی محمد است

He passed away on 21 Shaban-ul-Muazzam, 673 AH/ 1274 AD and his shrine is the resort of all in Sehwan Shareef.
