Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shah علیہ الرّحمہ
Name and Lineage:
His name is ‘SYED ABDULLAH SHAH’ and his title is ‘Bulleh Shah’, because of that he gained the eternity fame. That’s why, just few people know his real name. His respected father’s name is Syed Sakhi Dervish Muhammadرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ who was a pious Scholar and the Imam of a Masjid. He belonged to the Gilania Syed-family of ‘Och Shareef’ and through some mediums, his genealogy connects with the Imam-ul-Auliya Hazrat Ghaus-ul-Azam Sayyiduna Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jilani Baghdadiرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ .
Date of Birth:
Difference of opinion is found in his birth date but a probable speculation about his birth year, is 1091 AH/ 1680 AD.
Acquisition of Knowledge:
His respected father was a great Scholar of that time and the expert in Arabic and Persian language. Therefore, he received early education and training along with education of the Holy Quran from his respected father. Then, he went to Kasur in the service of Hafiz Ghulam Murtaza Siddiquiرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ and acquired the further education from him. It is reported that Hazrat Waris Shahرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ was also his disciple and both disciples became the great poets and he used to pride on both. Hazrat Bulleh Shah رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ gained skills in all the customary sciences of that time and he was counted in the great Scholar of his time.
Allegiance and Caliphate (Khilafat):
He took an oath of the allegiance on the blessed hand of Imam-ul-Muwahideen Hazrat Shah Inayatullah Qadriرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ and he was given the Khilafat after completion of the spiritual practice.
Character and Peculiarities:
Almighty Allah bestowed him the eternity fame. He was an embodiment of the knowledge, practice, asceticism, piety, truth and sincerity. According to his views that knowledge without practice and piety without sincerity is useless so he highlighted this point in his poetry. He said:
ہتھ وچ پھڑ کے تلوار نام رکھ لیا غازی
پڑھ پڑھ کتاباں علم دیاں توں نام رکھ لیا قاضی
At that time, there was a Pathan ruler in Kasur who remained busy in luxuries every time. Murshid instructed Baba Bulleh Shahرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ to go to Kasur and there were many expedients in sending him into Kasur because people of Kasur were irreligious, luxurious and rebellious, and religiousness and righteousness were not found in them absolutely. Kasur had become the center of immoderation and lawlessness. People of there would not give charity to the needy people so their reformation was extremely necessary. Apart from that, Sheikh Sahib wanted, that Bulleh Shah should have reached to the higher position of mysticism through preaching, sermonizing to the people and by enduring the inconvenience of people. When he came to Kasur, then he got busy in reciting of the Holy Quran and remembering of Almighty Allah all the time. People used to go to him for praying (Dua’) and they would get their desires. He started preaching gradually. Then, the blessings of religiousness started appearing in Kasur through his preaching and people began to incline towards the good deeds by leaving the bad actions. He wrote hundreds couplets. It is a great peculiarity of his poetry that not only educated people but also illiterate people would get enjoyment from it. The reality, truth and beauty is obvious everywhere in his poetry. Even today, people are happy to read his poetry. It is written in ‘Nafi-us-Salikeen’ the collection of sayings of Hazrat Khawaja Suleman Taunsviرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ:
“Hafiz Shirazi رحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ explained the issue of ‘the unity of existence’ under the terminologies of Sufis. The word of Hafiz Sahib cannot be understood without knowing of Sufis terminologies. Baba Bulleh Shahرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ is like a naked sword, that he clearly explained the issue of ‘Unity of existence’, whereas other Arifeen stated the same issue in Arabic or Persian language but Baba Bulleh Shahرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ defined it in Hindi language, which was the language of the people of Punjab at that time. The message of love, peace, tolerance and obedience is found in his poetry and thinking, sweetness, depth of feeling, fineness, simplicity and purity are seen in his poetry. His poetry is filled with mystic knowledge, wisdom and warnings.”
Hazrat Bulleh Shahرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ was a true lover of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم , follower of the Shariah and the true preacher of Islam. As we have already mentioned that godliness was seen at Kasur due to his preaching. Now at this time, many of ignorant people and transgressor use his poetry for the humor and disgrace to the Islamic signs and religious people. For example, offering prayers is woman’s work and fasting is to save the bread. Similarly, the person whose intention is defective, calls adhan loudly etc. They say that keep on doing whatever you want, just your heart should be clear. Masjid is correct and temple is correct too, you should not say wrong to anything. According to their saying, fall a Masjid but do not break someone’s heart. Is it the philosophy of Hazrat Baba Bulleh Shahرحمۃ اللہ تعالٰی علیہ ?
Let’s see, what the truth is. Almighty Allah’s words are pure from all kinds of defect. Everybody knows that the large number of Madu Hadiths (fabricated) are exist. Muhadditheen permanently wrote the books on the topic of ‘Asma-al-Rijal and Madu Ahadith, which is the clear proof of it, that some improvident people can tell a lie upon the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . When Hadiths can be fabricated, cannot the false poetry be attributed? In fact, the thing is that ignorant people know well that; if they say such things about Islam by themselves, they will be hit with shoes and people will be against them so they seek the help of a great deceased elderly and they fabricate a lie, then they attribute it to him.
In short, whenever you read or hear such things about a saint; in which, Islam and the signs of Islam have been mocked at. The truth is that, his side would have been attributed wrong to him or the implied meaning would be something else. If it comes from the reliable sources, it is the saying of the same saint.
In this situation, the Holy Quran and the Hadith is the argument for us.
Different sayings are found about his date of demise. According to ‘Tazkira Auliya-e-Pakistan’, he passed away in 1181 AH and his Shrine has become a blessed place for all the creation at Kasur railway station. His Urs is held on the 12th date of the new moon that is sighted in Bhadon (solar month), every year at Kasur.
