Ameer-ul-Momineen Hazrat Ameer Muawiyah رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ
Name and Genealogy:
His name is ‘Muawiyah’ and his kunyat is Abu Abdur Rahman. His lineage goes to the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم through the fifth generation by both parents.
Convert to the Islam:
According to the correct scholarly view, he embraced Islam on the day of ‘Sulh-e-Hudaibiyah’ in 7th Hijri. But he kept on hiding his Islam by the fear of disbelievers of Makkah like Hazrat Abbas رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ. (Hazrat Ameer Muawiyah par aik Nazar, P.36)
Some historians mentioned him as the compiler of hearts, that is not right.
A Brief Introduction
He was the son of Hazrat Abu Sufyan رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ son of Harb. His mother’s name was Hindah. Before the appearance of Islam, Abu Sufyan was counted among the rich men of Arab and he was one of the major enemies of Islam. After the conquest of holy Makkah, when the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم announced the general amnesty, then Abu Sufyan, Hindah and all his families embraced Islam. Ameer Muawiyah was also among them. After embracing Islam, he kept on trying to promote the Islam whole life. He was born in Makkah about eight years ago, from migrating to Madina. When he embraced Islam, he was twenty five years old. After conquest of the holy Makkah, the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم declared the ‘Bait-ul-Amn’ (the peace of home) of Abu Sufyan’s home for the satisfaction of the hearts of people, i.e. one who was secure would go to his home. The Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم appointed him as the writer of the revelation. A part of it, he entrusted the work of hospitality and care of the visitors and the people coming from outside the areas.
Hazrat Abu Bakr Siddiqرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ sent his brother Yazid son of Abu Sufyanرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ on the war of Syria. Ameer Muawiyah was also along with him. After the demise of Hazrat Yazid son of Abu Sufyanرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ , he was appointed as the governor of Damascus in his replacement, in the epoch of Hazrat Farooq-e-Azamرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ . The war of Qaisariah, one of the wars against the Romans, which was fought in his leadership. Eighty thousand Rumi were killed in that war. Hazrat Usman Ghaniرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ appointed him as the governor of all three provinces, Damascus, Jordan and Palestine and it was named the ‘Syria’ to that entire area. As the governor of Syria, his greatest achievement was the formation of Islamic Marine and the victory of Qabras (Cyprus). Hazrat Usman Ghaniرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ used to trust him a lot. He was one of the four renowned statesmen of Arab.
Hazrat Ameer Muawiyah رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ fought against ‘Khawarij’ and appointed the talented governors in Egypt, Kufa, Makkah and Madina. In his reign, which covered twenty years, some areas of Sijistan, Raqqah, Sudan, Africa, Tarablus (Tripoli), Aljazair and some areas of Sindh were conquered. His reign was the successful era. No area was excluded from the Islamic empire in his time, rather, the area of Islamic empire was constantly expanding.
According to a view, he passed away on 20 Rajab-ul-Murajjab 60 AH. He had a will,
“I have some blessed nails of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم , place them inside my eyes and enfold the ‘Tehband’ (waist piece) and ‘Qamees’ (shirt) of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم around my body and put his blessed hair into my mouth and nose; then hand me over to Almighty Allah.”
