Hazrat Sufyan Ibn (son of) Harb رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ
Name and Lineage:
His complete name is SAKHR son of Harb son of Umayya son of Abd Shams and his tribe is Umayyad Quraishi Al-Kunani as well as his title is Abu Hanzalah.
Date of Birth:
He was born in Makkah 560 AD/ 63 years before emigration (ten years before the event of Aamul Feel).
Character and Peculiarities:
He was a head of Umayyad branch of the Quraish tribe and he kept on opposing to the Islam for so long. He fought the Battle of Badr and Uhud against the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . Then, he attacked onto Madina with strong army but Muslims foiled the attackers’ plans by digging the trenches around Madina. He reconciled with Muslim at the place of Hudaibiya. When Muslims attacked onto Makkah, then he handed over the city to the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم . While entering to Makkah Rasool Allahجل جلالہ و صلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم announced, the people who takes the refuge at the home of Abu Sufyan, will not be fought with them. It was a great honor for him.
After conquering Makkah, he embraced Islam. Then, he participated in the battle of Hunain and the Siege of Taif and he lost an eye in the last-mentioned siege as well as he participated in campaigning of Syria and the Battle of Yarmouk in which he lost his second eye in the epoch of Hazrat Umar Farooqرضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ. The fifth Caliph of Muslims Ameer Muawiyah and Yazid son of Abu Sufyan were his children. He was a father-in-law of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ تعالٰی علیہ وسلم in the terms of relationship.
He passed away between 30 and 34 AH and he was buried in Jannat-ul-Baqi.
